DEMOS is focused on stronger democratic checks and balances between Mayor, Municipal Assembly (MA) and citizenry. In order to attain stronger democratic checks and balances DEMOS tries to balance the power of legislative and executive by strengthening accountability mechanisms. This approach strengthens the municipal assembly members, improves the reporting from the mayor to the municipal assembly members and increases the transparency of the legislative towards citizens.
In this light, DEMOS provides technical assistance to the Policy and Finance Committee (PFC) Public service committees in 3 DEMOS services (waste management, mobility and public spaces), training of MA members on their oversight role and strengthening women caucus of MAs.
Regarding the enhancement of local democracy and the right of the citizens to be heard at the local level the project will pilot direct democracy in 2 DEMOS partner municipalities.
