Towards a Greener Future: Helvetas Kosovo’s Commitment to Sustainability

Kosovo faces several environmental challenges, with transportation being one of the primary contributors to pollution. The heavy reliance on private vehicles for commuting worsens air quality issues and increases greenhouse gas emissions. Addressing these challenges requires innovative and collective efforts.

Helvetas Swiss Intercooperation Kosovo recently has taken significant steps to contribute to a greener future and promote sustainable practices. As part of its Decarbonisation Action Plan, the organisation has launched two key initiatives:

  1. Subsidy of Public Transport: Helvetas Swiss Intercooperation Kosovo is purchasing monthly public transport tickets for all staff members to encourage the use of public transportation, thereby decreasing the carbon footprint associated with daily commutes;
  2. Walking Competition: The organisation encourages staff members to install the StepsApp on their phones to track their steps. The data will be collected and compared monthly, fostering healthy competition. The winner at the end of the year will receive an additional day of leave

“We hope that through our joint efforts, we can contribute to reducing CO2 emissions and secure a more sustainable future,” says Ertan Munoglu, Country Manager of Helvetas Kosovo.

Another significant step towards sustainability is the use of electric taxi. Last year E-taxi acknowledged the contribution of Helvetas Kosovo to the improvement of the environment through sustainable transport, which resulted in reducing the organization’s carbon footprint by 303kg.

Energy Audit for Sustainable Practices

Helvetas Kosovo is also conducting an Energy Audit to identify areas where energy is being wasted. This audit will help in optimizing energy consumption and reducing overall energy costs.

“By understanding energy usage patterns, it will help us in optimizing energy consumption, reducing overall energy costs. Lower energy consumption means fewer greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to environmental sustainability,” says Majlinda Jupolli, who leads this process on behalf of Helvetas Kosovo.

The organization has also launched an internal awareness-raising campaign aimed at reducing the environmental impact by promoting sustainable practices, and advocating for waste reduction, electricity and water usage to set an example of responsible resource use.

Additionally, Helvetas Kosovo greened the office with plants and is implementing waste management practices by separating waste into different bins for recycling purposes.

All these initiatives reflect Helvetas Kosovo’s strong commitment to sustainability and environmental direction. By addressing transportation emissions, optimizing energy use, and promoting awareness, the organization is paving the way for a greener future. These efforts not only benefit the environment but also enhance the well-being of the community and future generations.
